Taxation at Retirement workshops

At the point of retirement and in the period afterwards, money is the single most important concern for most people. On top of that, taxation at the time of retirement is for many individuals the most complex tax period of their life.

Frequently, individuals who previously had their tax affairs handled by their employer and PAYE will have to cope with the tax authorities for the first time.

Life Academy has joined with TaxHelp for Older People and gained funding from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to run six one-day workshops on tax issues at retirement.

Aims and Objectives

Our aim is to offer education, support and advice for those in the voluntary sector supporting older people and for individuals approaching retirement, particularly around the life event of becoming a pensioner. We will equip individuals to make better informed decisions at retirement and in later life and equip those in the voluntary sector to provide the most effective support.

The objectives of these workshops are:

  • to identify the tax and financial issues that are important at retirement
  • to enable those from the voluntary sector to support individuals at and beyond retirement on tax issues
  • to increase understanding so that individuals are able to make informed tax and financial choices
  • to raise awareness of the tax processes so that people are able to interact with HMRC effectively and comfortably.

The workshops will include subjects such as:

  • The changing retirement and pensions landscape
  • Pensions: state, occupational and personal
  • Which income and assets are taxable and non-taxable?
  • How is tax collected?
  • Rates, bands, codes and allowances
  • The PAYE Pensioner
  • The Self Assessment Pensioner
  • Dealing with tax offices
  • Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax

Who should attend?

These workshops are aimed at reaching those in the voluntary sector who provide support; and individuals in hard to reach groups who do not traditionally benefit from pre-retirement education.

If you are a volunteer or work in the voluntary sector or know any individuals within three years of retirement who would benefit from the workshops, you/they are welcome to attend.

The workshops, fully funded by HMRC, are free of charge to all attendees.

Life Academy and TaxHelp for Older People are both independent charities. There will be no selling involved – just help and advice.
