Alan Pickering to deliver Life Academy's 2006 Annual Lecture

Life Academy today announces that Alan Pickering will deliver their Annual Lecture, this year taking place on Wednesday 22nd November 2006 at One Great George Street, London.

The lecture, entitled “Are our Pensions Fit for Workers and our Workers Fit for Retirement?” will follow the educational charity’s Annual General Meeting.

Alan, Life Academy Trustee and Partner at Watson Wyatt, has long believed that increased working lives are essential if we are to balance our pension budget and avoid social strife. He has, however, argued that working longer does not necessarily mean staying in the same job or working to the same intensity and has often painted a picture of a skills exchange where older workers can swap skills to their mutual advantage and to the benefit of society at large.

This year's tax changes make it possible for workers to save what they want, when they want and how they want through a pension scheme. In this year's annual lecture Alan will:

  • consider whether the White Paper proposals will build on these tax changes in a way that will benefit workers, employers and the wider economy;
  • emphasise that increased financial literacy and awareness of healthy lifestyles are essential if working people are to take full advantage of emerging opportunities; and
  • acknowledge that there are limits to the extent to which it is realistic to expect individuals to take control of their own destiny but will highlight ways in which society can make our financial system and training programmes more inclusive thereby reducing the number of our citizens who feel financially excluded and abandoned on the industrial scrap heap whilst still in their prime.

If you would like to attend the Annual Lecture, please contact Life Academy directly on 01483 301170 or email them at info@life-academy.co.uk.
