Life Academy announces 2007 dates for Pre-Retirement and Retirement Planning courses

Life Academy today launches their 2007 calendar of dates for their public pre-retirement courses taking place in London , Guildford , Godalming, Slough and Leeds .

Once seen as a time of old age and shortage of money, retirement is now generally associated with more positive feelings: most of us can expect to spend a quarter of our lifespan in retirement and, with the resources to support a comfortable lifestyle, it can be a time of opportunity and fulfilment. However, lack of proper planning for retirement can lead to boredom, frustration and financial worries for many people.

The aim of Life Academy’s two-day course is to consider the changes that take place at retirement and how they can be managed in a positive way. Life Academy aims to shift the attitudes of course attendees, turning any negative attitudes of retirement into positive ones. The objectives of the course are:

  • to know what issues are important at retirement
  • to understand the processes of managing the retirement transition
  • to understand the process of taking stock, looking at options and planning the future at the time of transition into retirement in areas such as finance, health, work, leisure, relationships and self-identity.

Stuart Royston, Chief Executive of Life Academy commented “Anyone from the age of 50 upwards within 2 years of retirement should consider attending a pre-retirement course. This gives ample time to prepare properly for the next phase of your life and cope with the transition. We strongly recommend the attendance of the retiree’s spouse or partner on the course at the same time.”

In addition to these pre-retirement courses, Life Academy are introducing a new one-day course on later career and retirement planning aimed at those people who are around 5 years from retirement. These workshops have been designed in response to the changing nature of retirement. The age discrimination legislation that took effect in October of this year means that retirement is no longer an event, but more of a process with employers having to provide adequate notice of retirement and having to manage their older staff on the basis of competence rather than age.

These later career and retirement planning courses will:

  • review the changing retirement and pension landscape
  • review pensions and finance against likely needs in retirement and equip the course participants to identify and rectify gaps in their financial provision
  • look at pensions, investment and risk
  • look at the later stages of work to maintain skills and effectiveness and determine work objectives before and after leaving full-time paid work
  • take stock of what the individual wants to take into retirement and start the planning process
  • understand the ageing process and maintaining health in the working environment.

As well as the public one-day workshops in London, these sessions can also be introduced ‘in-house’ in companies to start the retirement planning process that will run in harmony with the company HR policies and culminate in a pre-retirement course.
