Aims and Learning Outcomes

Aims of the programme

To extend knowledge of the life course and life planning including mid-life planning and pre-retirement education.

  • To provide a programme of study which will meet the needs of professionals and individuals from a variety of settings, e.g. human resources, health, education, financial.
  • To understand the theories of life planning and elements which contribute to its development and practice.
  • To produce a programme which is intellectually challenging and relevant to the changing world of work, work exit and retirement.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • understand the global nature of work and how this impacts on retention, work exit, retirement and the life course
  • be aware of the life course, its underpinning theory and the process of managing change
  • have a knowledge and understanding of how adults learn, relevant issues and contexts, and be able to apply theoretical understanding to the practice of life planning
  • have a knowledge and understanding of relevant research methods and be able to apply them to practice.
