About the Course

The aim of this programme is to enable delegates to apply their professional expertise to the facilitation of groups, and to establish and implement interactive programmes which will be effective.

By the end of the course, delegates will:

  • understand the essential requirements for being a facilitator
  • learn ways to identify and meet the needs of people attending their courses
  • practice and build key facilitation skills
  • have their facilitation skills and competencies assessed.

You will understand the principles of facilitation and where and how to use it; have the confidence to adapt your style to the changing processes in groups; select facilitation as the preferred learning mode when appropriate, and learn to develop your focus to support individual and group needs.

Who is it for?

This experiential course will build on and develop your facilitation skills for working with adults and gain a professional qualification.

Delegates for this programme will come from a range of professional backgrounds and will be interested in working with different subjects and needs.

Course content

The programme will enable you to:

  • design and implement a programme of activity for use in your area of work/expertise, which will enhance participant learning and development
  • identify and develop appropriate methods
  • build toolkits and resources
  • explore creative and innovative techniques.

How will you study?

The six-day course will be split into two study blocks, taking place a Life Academy's office in Guildford, which will set the scene by introducing the core concepts of facilitation, and build in demonstrations and practice. The course will then assist you in identifying your relevant experience of practical facilitation and the needs you have concerning the facilitation of interactive learning with groups. Appropriate theoretical information to support practice will be identified.

You will then gain the opportunity to practice and build on your facilitation skills in a safe environment.

Assessment

Both formal and informal assessments of the programme are possible. Informal assessment will take place within the course by a short facilitation. This will involve the development of a detailed plan for a facilitated session of 30 minutes based on participant needs.

Formal assessment will consist of four main elements:

  • A detailed plan, including relevant theory, for a session of your choice of a minimum of 3 hours based on participant needs;
  • An external observed practice session of your choice of a minimum of 3 hours;
  • An internal observed practice session of 30 minutes;
  • A written self-reflective assignment on the external observed practice session with learning points for the future.
